Memorial Day weekend is finally here and there’s no shortage of things to do in Sag Harbor, that’s for sure—from theater shows and museums to book signings and cinema, and of course the big launch of Leallo Sag Harbor (in the old Sunny location) Sag is gearing up for the summer season in the most incredible way—yet we at Leallo typically gravitate toward the serene little spots tucked away from the crowds, the best kept secrets, local treasures and the little respites that keep us going, in the most grounded and beautiful ways. Leallo staff are spilling the tea on all the best, most restoring, relaxing and reviving insider secrets in Sag Harbor, for a perfect weekend on the wharf.
FAMILIES WITH (OR WITHOUT) KIDS:
From Mashashimuet to Morton Wildlife Refuge, Sag Harbor is filled with great activities for families. Our top pick though is quite unexpected… It’s the new(ish) Kidd Squid Brewery, right next to the beautiful Sag Harbor Garden Center. This little gem not only serves up the most delicious local brews for the grown-ups, but the live music, outdoor garden plus the lush and lively location makes it perfect spot for the kids to just run around and get their crazies out while the adults relax at the end of the day. We also love all their collaborations with local businesses and non-profits, like the Grindstone (donuts) Stout and the Sag Harbor (cinema) Lager that donates 10% of sales to the Sag Harbor Cinema Arts Center.
BEST COFFEE:
Erica, Leallo’s general manager loves Sagtown Coffee and highly recommends ordering ahead for pickup, (especially during peak hours). Hannah is a diehard Dreamy Coffee fan (located inside Sylvester and Co.) and Meg is counting down the days until Jacks Stir Brew comes back to Sag, rumor has it they’re relocating to Main Street this time. You’ll never have a hard time finding good coffee in Sag Harbor.
PERFECT GIFTS:
As we always say, never show up empty handed. For a perfect gift we love Sylvester and Co. Modern General Store. Their clean aesthetic and ‘little-bit-of-everything’ inventory makes gift shopping incredibly easy, and you’re almost guaranteed to come out of there with a little something for yourself. We love to bring a little something for the kids as well, and our fav spots are Stella and Ruby for lots of whimsy and frills, or Ethel and Row for a cool monochromatic vibe, which shop will suit your needs depends on the whims of your tiny customer.
LUNCH SPOTS:
For a ‘sit down and relax’ lunch in Sag, Leallo founder Meg always loves Lulus, “They have a nice back patio so you can sit outside, and it feels like you’re in a little garden.” While Hannah, Leallo’s marketing manager, loves to slide into the bar at K Pasa “Don’t pass up the salsa here, the pomegranate molasses takes it next level, and I always pair it with a prickly pear marg.” For lunch on-the-go, or a quick bite with the kids, Provisions is another Leallo top pick. “The turkey taco salad is so good!!!” says Meg, “I'm also obsessed with the watermelon juice in the summer.” Erica is all about grabbing sandwiches at Cavaniolas and heading straight to the beach with her kids.
WATERVIEW DINING:
We’re all-in for Beacon year after year (they just opened for the season last week) with their incredible water views, extensive seafood selections and perfect summer cocktails. (p.s. Try their Thai chili infused spicy passion fruit margarita!)
BEACHES:
Our top beach pick, because of its majestic sunset views, perfect beachcombing and incredible convenience/accessibility, is Long Beach. Meg loves to head down after a long workday to watch the sunset, stick her toes in the water, and decompress. “It’s a great place to just pull over and take a breather, find some beach glass, eat your Provisions burrito, or take a selfie with your kids” says Hannah. Whether you’ve got a full day or just a few minutes in your busy schedule, Long Beach is a must for MDW.
SPAS/TREATMENTS:
Meg loves to grab a mani/pedi at Scarlett Rose, but she says “For a facial, I love Judith Desiree, I've been seeing her for year, and she is the absolute best! I'm obsessed!” And while we haven’t tried it out yet, we’re dying to go spend some time at the brand-new Wave Wellness with all their cutting-edge detox treatments.
NEWCOMERS:
We’re eyeing up the brand-new Sag Harbor Kitchen pop-up, which took over the old Dockside space. There’s a ton of buzz about the Michelin award-winning chef who conceptualized the sea-to-table communal/local vibe experience. Everyone’s also been talking about the new wine bar, Vin Sur Vingt (opening date TBD) with its 240 rotating wines and 40 by the glass but chances are we will skip the big crowd draws over the weekend and try them out on a quieter night.
BEST FARMSTAND:
Hands down Leallo staff votes for Serene Green Farm. With their own line of prepared foods, plus baked goods, fresh flowers, local honey and so much more, it’s the perfect spot to stock up for the weekend or to just make pitstops for treats anytime.
BEST SPOT TO GET AWAY FROM IT ALL:
Hannah loves to stroll the residential neighborhoods off Madison Street, appreciating the architecture and gardens, maybe stopping off at Sage Street Antiques. And Morton Wildlife Refuge, where chick-a-dees will land right in your hand, is always an incredible experience. Yet, at the end of the day, our homes are the ultimate respite, and Meg’s Sag Harbor abode truly is just that. She decorates thoughtfully, focusing on indoor/outdoor living for the summer. “I love going to the Sag Harbor Farmer’s Market on a Saturday morning and stocking up on all sorts of fresh goodies for the weekend. I do love to go into town and be in the action a little in the summer, but also love hanging at our house with family and friends.”
